Press Release 17th June 2014 - A Positive Step: Mentrau Iaith Cymru Welcome Wales’s First Minister’s Announcements Regarding Welsh Language

Mentrau Iaith Cymru have today welcomed the First Minister’s announcements at the Senedd regarding the Welsh Government’s plans to offer further support to promote and strengthen the Welsh language, including further resources and funding for key projects. The extra resources to promote the Welsh language in the community are encouraging, and Mentrau Iaith Cymru considers the announcements as a positive step forward towards securing more realistic funding for the language in the long term.
During his announcement the First Minister acknowledged that the work of the Mentrau and their part in strengthening and promoting the language across Wales is important, whilst also acknowledging that the Welsh language still faces difficult and complicated challenges.
In response to the First Minister’s announcement, a spokesperson on behalf of Mentrau Iaith Cymru stated: “we welcome the First Minister’s statements today and his comments confirm that the Mentrau will continue to be key partners of the Welsh Government who work to promote and facilitate the use of the Welsh language. We also agree with the First Minister that the Welsh language continues to face serious problems relating to a number of aspects of community life, and to this end it is essential that the Welsh Government offers continued support and increased investment in the long term so that we can create stronger foundations for the language in our communities across Wales.”

Exhibition detailing the history of the Llay Mining Rescue Station

Exhibition detailing the history of the Llay Mining Rescue Station

The North Wales Miners’ Association Trust has been supported by the Co-operative Language Project to develop a bilingual exhibition detailing the history of the Llay Mining Rescue Station. The exhibition was launched to mark the centenary of the opening of the Rescue Station, and will travel to fairs and community events as part of NWMAT’s Mining Heritage Bus.

Councillor Phil Wynn said, ‘A number of NWMAT are Welsh speakers so it was important for the group to engage with members of the public on the topic of coal-mining heritage in the Welsh language. Without Menter Iaith’s involvement and support this would not have happened to the same extent.’

Welsh on Tour – Flintshire and Wrexham 2013
24/04/13 - 24/5/13

This year, for the first time, the seventh Flintshire and Wrexham Welsh On Tour campaign is extending from a week of Welsh language activities of all sorts to a month long event. The calendar is heaving with events, from a Gwlad y Rwla Party to celebrate the 30th birthday of Rala Rwdins (Welsh children’s book favourite), to a tour of the “Wrexham Lager” brewery, from a Business Networking Evening to the launch of a new Welsh language Street Dance Club.

Gwawr Cordiner, Manager of Menter Iaith Sir y Fflint and Menter Iaith Maelor said, “The main purpose of the campaign is to promote the Welsh Language across the counties of Flintshire and Wrexham in schools, communities, and in the workplace with Welsh speakers, learners and non-Welsh speakers. The tour is an opportunity for the county’s language partnership to work together to raise awareness of the Welsh language and culture. There’s something for everyone!”

Rhian Davies, Business Officer at Menter Iaith Sir y Fflint, and responsible for the co-ordination of the campaign added, “Our aim is to bring attention to all the things that happen locally through the medium of Welsh already, launch new things and organise a few extra special events to celebrate the lively Welsh culture and language in North East Wales. A lot of people have the misconception that this is a very English area, but as you can see from the Welsh on Tour 2013 calendar, there is plenty of opportunity to be out every evening of the week, if desired, socialising through the medium of Welsh.”

A calendar of all the events can be seen by clicking here.
(Upon opening the attachment, the calendar will appear very small as there are so many events, but you can zoom in to make the text larger!)

Winter Family Project

After the success of the family project in the summer Menter Iaith Maelor received a second grant from the Welsh language Board in order to organise events with families where the parents had attended Welsh medium schools bot had now lost their confidence to use their language.

teulu

Families that were part of the project visited ‘Runaround Playcentre’ and the children (and parents) enjoyed running around the centre. Food was organised for all the family and it was an opportunity to distribute resources and information about social opportunities for families to use the Welsh language and also to promote S4C programmes and Welsh language books that the children would enjoy reading.

Sian and Gwawr attended a meeting in Cardiff to deliver a presentation to give feedback on the pilot. The Welsh Language Board was very happy with the results of the project with one mother now a leader of the Cylch Meithrin, Ysgol Feithrin and also receiving Cam wrth Gam training. Also 4 of the parents that were part of the project complete a Welsh Refreshers Course to increase their confidence to use the Welsh language once again.

The Ffin Fach

On the 8th of October the L’etage club in Wrexham was the venue for Y Ffin Fach which is the sister of the Welsh music festival Y Ffin. It was a chance for new and upcoming bands from Wrexham, Flintshire and Denbighshire to show off their musical talent and to raise awareness of Welsh music in Wrexham. Not only was the night a chance for young bands to play their own original songs but the very successful Welsh band Masters in France headlined the night with their songs., Masters in France have had huge success with their singles being played on Radio 1 and they have played at various venues across Britain.

Sian Edwards said ‘The Ffin Fach has been a great chance for the Wrexham people to hear new bands that varied from folk groups to rock music. Masters in France were great and I hope that the night raised awareness the people of Wrexham of the Welsh music scene and I hope there will be many more nights of Welsh music will be had in the county.

European Language Awareness Day

To celebrate European Language Awareness Day the Menter held language awareness session too many of the counties pupils, the pupils then had the chance to create a banner with symbols of what they though symbolised and represented Wales best. The pupils decorated great banners; however there was a lot of clearing up to do after the arts and crafts session.

The Menter held a stall where children had the chance to create Welsh banners. It was a very successful day with the sun shining and everyone enjoying the entertainment from local choirs.

Children from Ysgol Feithrin Bodhyfyrd meeting Cadi

On Monday the 28th children from Ysgol Feithrin Bodhyfryd got the chance to have a morning of fun when Cai (One of the Urdd’s characters came to meet them). Michelle read stories for the children and then they had a session of singing and dancing with Cadi. The children had lots of fun dancing with Cadi and playing with new instruments. We hope Cadi can go and meet more children in the future.

Research into the Welsh Language
For many months now Michelle has been organizing and holding events in the rural areas of Wrexham and doing research on the use of the Welsh Language, so it was sad to hear of the news that she was leaving her post. Sian Edwards has now been appointed the job to sustain the project till February 2011. She hopes to keep up the good work that was done by Michelle and her aim is to update the profile of rural Wrexham to record the number of people who speak Welsh in the area and to keep on organizing events that will promote the Welsh language.

Animation Workshop

On Satuday 27th March, lots of fun was had in the animation workshop, where Deiniol Morris, one of the creators of Gogs, showed everyone how to do animation work. 20 videos were created in total, by the children and young people of Wrecsam. All the videos can be seen on the Facebook page for Menter Iaith Maelor.

These free activities were organised by Menter Iaith Maelor, as part of their Welsh Language Development and Research Project for Rural Wrexham with the aid of the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013 which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
