Yr Amgueddfa Atogofion (the Memory Museum)

Menter Iaith Sir Dinbych’s oral history project ‘Yr Amgueddfa Atgofion’ is by now well underway. This is an exciting new 18 month project carried out in partnership with The Clwydian Range and The Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The project is funded by The Lottery’s Heritage Fund with extra support from the Local Rural Development Agency, Cadwyn Clwyd. The project involves collecting people’s memories of daily life in the countryside. It will be an amazing opportunity for children and people of all ages to work together and create exhibitions and a detailed record of the changes faced by farming families in Denbighshire in the period between the 1940’s and today. Our first Memory Collecting event was held at the end of February over a period of two days in Corwen. It proved a great success. We scanned old pictures and spoke to a number of interesting characters about the good old days. One friendly gentleman brought and old tractor along for us to see, as well as an amazing collection of old farming implements. He kept us amused while we tried to guess what on earth the tools were! BBC Radio Cymru recorded a snippet for ‘Y Post Cyntaf’ that was broadcasted on Thursday, February the 28th. We will now be interviewing those who left their contact details with us. Those interviews will aid us in creating a detailed archive for the Folk Museum in Cardiff and help us create digital stories for the project.

A series of similar events will be held over the next few months. However, if you live in Debighshire and would like to contribute towards our project, you don’t have to wait until we hold a Memory Collecting event in your area.
You are more than welcome to contact Cathryn Griffith, Amgueddfa Atgofion’s Project Officer on 01745 812822 or cathryn@menterdinbych.org anytime.

Grant assistance to attend courses at Nant Gwrtheyrn

Since June 2012 a considerable number of North Wales residents have taken advantage of a rural development grant which means that they can attend Welsh language courses at Nant Gwrtheyrn for a considerable discount. Anyone who works, volunteers or works for the benefit of a rural area in North Wales (which includes the vast majority of the county of Denbighshire) can come on a 5-day course for £125 instead of the usual price of £495.

This is a co-operational project between the North Wales Language Enterprises including Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych following their success in receiving funding through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013, (funded by the Welsh Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development).

Nant Gwrtheyrn is a valuable asset for Welsh speakers of all levels – from pure beginners up to fluent speakers who wish to perfect their written skills. Nothing compares with 3 or 5 days of immersion to improve your language skills.

So if you would like to take advantage of our provision, or if you know someone who could benefit from the plan, contact miriam@nantgwrtheyrn.org (01758 570334) to discuss if you are eligible and for an application form.

Our Welsh language column in the Denbighshire Free Press has been running for several years now and over this time it has grown and developed into a whole page of news and comments in Welsh. We are very proud of this. But we know that without the help of those people within the local community who support our work with their contributions this would not have been possible. Our vision, in partnership with the editor, is to increase the space for Welsh comments and news to two pages. Therefore we need more articles of all kinds, stories, reminiscences and news from Welsh speakers or those who are learning the language.  Whatever interests, excites or angers you let us know by contacting
