Memories of rural Life in Denbighshire

Memories of Rural Life in Denbighshire

Collection of digital stories produced as part of our oral history project about life in rural Denbighshire since the 1940s.

In addition, some of the stories can be read in the booklet produced as part of the project.

Tributes have been paid to the poet from Denbigh, John Glyn Jones, who died on Tuesday, 12 May 2015, aged 68.

John Glyn Jones was Chairman of Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych since October 2013 and had been part of the management committee since 2009.

Ruth Williams, Chief Officer said: "It was a privilege to work under the guidance of John Glyn. He was a very fair chairman and encouraged healthy debate with his unique humour. He was an ambassador for the language and therefore completely at home steering Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych. He was particularly looking forward to the next steps of the county’s Welsh language strategy being agreed and implemented. He leaves a huge gap not only for us as staff and fellow committee members, but in the development and safeguarding of the Welsh language in the county."

Emrys Wynne, Vice Chairman of Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych said: "John Glyn was taken from our community suddenly, but left a legacy unparalleled in his town, the wider area and across Wales. He was a quiet leader and a prudent contributor and got on with his work without seeking any credit. He provided a steady hand at the helm. He will be sorely missed, but I'm confident that his legacy will be seen in Denbigh and beyond, as the Welsh language develops."

John Glyn Jones was also Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Denbighshire & District National Eisteddfod in 2013. Ruth recalled how she had worked closely with John Glyn during 2011-2103 whilst the area prepared itself for the national festival. She added: "Seeing the Eisteddfod in Denbigh was undoubtedly a highlight for many of us in the area, and John Glyn’s role was key to the success.”

"We extend our deepest sympathy went to children, his family and close friends."

Cystadleuaeth Addurno Ffenestri Dydd Gŵyl Dewi

Ers tair blynedd bellach mae Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych wedi cynnal cystadleuaeth addurno ffenestri siopau tref Dinbych fel rhan o ddathliadau dydd Gŵyl Dewi y dref. Mae’r gystadleuaeth wedi mynd o nerth i nerth dros y blynyddoedd a nifer o fusnesau y dref wedi cysylltu a ni eisoes i sôn eu bod yn edrych ymlaen i gymryd rhan eto eleni. Felly mi fydd llythyr a pecyn ymgeisio yn mynd i holl fusnesau'r dref yn fuan. Rhaid dweud ein bod wedi cael ein syfrdannu gyda ymroddiad a sgiliau creadigol busnesau Dinbych yn y gorffennol ac rydym yn sicr yn edrych ymlaen i weld beth fyddant yn gweud hefo eu ffenestri y flwyddyn hon!

Unwaith eto byddem yn ymweld â’r siopau i gyd i benderfynu pa siop sydd â’r ffenestr gorau a bydd llun y siop fuddugol ynghyd ag erthygl fach yn ymddangos yn y Free Press a Newyddlen ddwyieithog y Fenter, sydd â chylchrediad o dros 5,000 o bobl ledled y sir. Yn ogystal mi fydd y cwmni buddugol yn ennill lle am hysbyseb gwerth £25 yn y Newyddlen ynghyd â thlws a thystysgrif i’w arddangos yn y siop.

Mae’r gystadleuaeth hefyd yn gyfle i dynnu sylw busnesau at yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol sydd yn dod i Sir Ddinbych 2013. Mae ymweliad gan yr Eisteddfod yn gyfle euraidd i fusnesau elwa o ymweliad 150,000 - 160,000 o bobl i’r ardal, ac yn ôl ymchwil annibynnol, mae cynnal y Brifwyl yn dod â £6-8 miliwn i economi’r dalgylch yn ystod yr wythnos, gyda’r sectorau dwristiaeth a lletygarwch yn elwa fwyaf. Mi fydd hyn yn hwb mawr i’r economi leol ac mae’r gystadleuaeth yma yn ffordd wych o gychwyn ar Gymreigio busnes i wneud y gorau o’r cyfle!

Hanes Lowri

Dros y chwe mis diwethaf rwyf wedi bod yn gweithio fel Swyddog Cynorthwyol gyda Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych. Hwn oedd fy swydd cyntaf llawn amser ers gorffen astudio Hanes ym Mhrifysgol Bangor. Roedd y cyfle hwn yn ardderchog i ennill profiadau amrywiol a sgiliau newydd o fewn y byd gwaith. Un elfen o’r swydd oedd gwaith gweinyddol cyffredinol yn y swyddfa, a rhan arall o’r gwaith yn ymwneud â mynd allan i’r gymuned leol i hybu’r iaith Gymraeg, drwy gyfarfod pobl o bob oedran a chymryd rhan mewn amryw weithgareddau,. Cefais hefyd y cyfle i fynychu nifer o gyrsiau hyfforddiant sydd wedi fy ngalluogi i ennill cymwysterau a fydd yn fanteisiol i mi at y dyfodol. Credaf fod fy nghyfnod gyda Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych wedi bod yn brofiad ardderchog ac o fudd mawr imi . Rwyf wedi mwynhau fy amser yno yn fawr iawn, wedi cael llawer o hwyl ac wedi dysgu llawer. Hwyl Hanner Tymor

Yn ystod gwyliau’r hanner tymor cynhaliwyd dau ddiwrnod o weithgareddau i blant yng Nghanolfan Cymunedol Llanfwrog a Chlwb Rygbi Dinbych. Yn ystod y ddau ddiwrnod roedd cyfle i blant fwynhau gweithgareddau am ddim gan y Fenter Iaith a’r Urdd.

Roedd 60 o blant wedi mynychu’r Hwyl Hanner Tymor ac roedd pob un i weld wedi mwynhau eu hunain yn fawr. Cafodd y plant gyfle i wneud nifer o weithgareddau gwahanol fel sesiwn ddawnsio gan Non Cooper o’r Urdd, cwis gan Lois Jones o’r Urdd, gweithdy gwneud ‘Rocky Roads’ gyda staff o Siop Siocled Dinbych yn ogystal â sesiwn o ‘Kung-Fu’ gyda Pol Wong o Wrecsam. Yn ystod amser egwyl a chinio roedd y plant yn cael cyfle i chwarae pêl-droed a tenis gyda staff o’r Fenter a’r Urdd. Oherwydd llwyddiant y ddau ddiwrnod mae’r Fenter a’r Urdd yn gobeithio cydweithio eto i drefnu fwy o ddiwrnodau fel hyn yn y dyfodol agos. Felly cofiwch edrych allan am y digwyddiad.

Diolch yn fawr iawn i bawb!

The Memory Museum – event!

Things are progressing with Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych’s oral history project, in partnership with the Clwydian Range and The Dee Valley Area of Outstanding National Beauty and Cadwyn Clwyd and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. We are holding our first Memory Gathering Event soon! If you would like to be part of the Memory Museum, which is about the history of farming and country life in Denbighshire, then join us at the Sports Pavilion in Corwen between 2pm and 8pm pm Wednesday and Thursday, February 27th and 28th, 2013. Come to share your stories, old photographs and agricultural implements while enjoying a chat and a cup of tea.

Our view is to collect information regarding local people’s experience of agriculture in Denbighshire. We will scan a copy of your photographs during the event and so won’t need to keep them. The Memory Museum is primarily an oral history project. Because of this we have a specific interest in stories from memory. These are very valuable! If you have a story about any area of country life in Denbighshire from the 1940’s onwards, come and have a chat. Volunteers will be there to take your details and the theme of your story and we’ll arrange a convenient time to interview you individually if you’d like. This is a great chance for the community to be part of an important and exciting archive!

If you’d like more information about our first event in Corwen or would like to work with us to create a similar Memory Gathering event in your local community, then you’re welcome to contact Cathryn Griffith, our Project Officer by phone 01745 812822 or e-mail cathryn@menterdinbych.org

Calling all Welsh-speakers – free media training

logo estyn llaw logo mind cymru

We’re delighted to announce that Mind Cymru has been given a grant by Estyn Llaw to increase our number of Welsh-speaking media volunteers.

Mind Cymru media volunteers are people who have had training in being interviewed for radio or TV. They talk about their own experiences of mental health problems and the issues involved. This could mean everyday life, good or bad services, having overcome challenges or faced discrimination. Media volunteers aren’t asked to speak on behalf of Mind Cymru or about policy issues, just to tell their own stories of what life is like.

When an opportunity to take part in a media story comes up, someone from Mind Cymru contacts our media volunteers to see if they are interested in being involved. (Mind Cymru never gives people’s contact details to journalists without their agreement.) Being a media volunteer doesn’t mean people have to agree to every request – it’s perfectly fine for people to say no if they’re busy or just don’t feel like it.

Other media volunteers have told us that the media training day itself is interesting and good fun. We’re running one session in Wrexham and will pay the travel costs of people taking part.

Your Welsh doesn’t have to be ‘perfect’ – our friends in media departments tell us that people worry about this far too much. As long as you’re willing to have a go at talking about issues in Welsh, we’d love to hear from you.

To find out more, please contact Rachel Bowen (Welsh learner) on 029 2034 6588 email: r.bowen@mind.org.uk

The Welsh Language Skills Certificate is open to all students  studying at a university in Wales, so, if you’re a student, get in touch!

Employers ...

Dr Gwennan Schiavone, Coleg Sectretary and Academic Senior Manager said; “The Coleg is committed to meet the demands for bilingual skills in the workplace, and we are eager to collaborate with a wide range of employers accross Wales”.

The Coleg wants to hear from businesses and organisations from across the country.

Are you keen to be part of a wide network of businesses and organisations that support the Welsh Language Skills Certificate? Can you offer a period of work experience to the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol’s scholarship students?

The Coleg’s officers would like to discuss both schemes with interested employers and students.

Grant assistance to attend courses at Nant Gwrtheyrn

Since June 2012 a considerable number of North Wales residents have taken advantage of a rural development grant which means that they can attend Welsh language courses at Nant Gwrtheyrn for a considerable discount. Anyone who works, volunteers or works for the benefit of a rural area in North Wales (which includes the vast majority of the county of Denbighshire) can come on a 5-day course for £125 instead of the usual price of £495.

This is a co-operational project between the North Wales Language Enterprises including Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych following their success in receiving funding through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013, (funded by the Welsh Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development).

Nant Gwrtheyrn is a valuable asset for Welsh speakers of all levels – from pure beginners up to fluent speakers who wish to perfect their written skills. Nothing compares with 3 or 5 days of immersion to improve your language skills.

So if you would like to take advantage of our provision, or if you know someone who could benefit from the plan, contact miriam@nantgwrtheyrn.org (01758 570334) to discuss if you are eligible and for an application form.

Launching the Menter’s new logo

During the AGM on Wednesday, the 3rd of October 2012 Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych launched its new logo.

Why change the logo?
On the 1st of March this year the Welsh Government published the document ‘A living language: a language for living,’ the strategy designed by Welsh ministers to promote and facilitate the use of the Welsh language. Shortly after this the new Language Measure was enshrined in law which led to appointing the Language Commissioner.

The Welsh Government’s strategy acknowledges the important role of the Mentrau Iaith in achieving its vision. With this in mind we feel that now is a good time to choose a new logo to reflect our close relationship with our community partners who share our hopes and vision for the exiting times ahead.

The previous logo was adopted back in October 2003 when Menter Iaith Dinbych-Conwy became two separate entities. Since then the Menter has continued to grow and evolve, changing its working practices and ways of communicating to meet the various needs and challenges of the times.

The new logo makes use of the colours in Denbighshire County Council’s logo which represent the county’s landscape; the fields, sea and sky. By using the speech marks we are also trying to convey the concept of communicating with all members of the community, Welsh speaking and otherwise.

Nerys Davies, the Menter’s Chair, said
“Since Menter Iaith Dinbych was established in 2003 communication methods have undergone a dramatic transformation. The new logo reflects the importance of communicating with our various partners.  It also reflects the Menter’s central role in the community.  It’s a symbol of the exiting changes and developments of the past years, and of the exiting opportunities ahead.”

We have also taken the opportunity to change the Menter’s email domain to @menterdinbych.org  So, from now on if you want to contact any of our staff you simply write their first name followed by the new domain, i.e gill@menterdinbych.org or gerallt@menterdinbych.org

Denbigh and Flint Show

Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych officers were once again were on the show field at the Denbigh and Flint Show on August 16th.

The show offered a great day full of entertainment for all the family with stalls, cooking demonstrations using local produce, trade stands, machinery and classic cars and, of course, the animals - cattle, sheep, goats and horses.

In the Food Hall, where 40 different exhibitors offered delicious food from local produce, there was a cookery demonstration by Mary Berry, and she also held a book signing. Mary has written over 50 books specialising in baking and was recently seen on the successful series The Great British Bake Off, on BBC 2.

The prime attractions in the Main Ring were the Dancing Diggers, horses and ponies, horse jumping, inter-hunt relay, working dogs, dog races and a number of different parades.

Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych held a number of different activities to entertain the kids and were ready to answer visitors' queries and share information about our work to promote the Welsh language within the community.
